With everything the weekend had to offer, making definitive plans was a bit of a problem. I?m happy to say I chose wisely.

The Atlantic held a huge ?Back to School Bonzai? with Oh No! And the Tiger Pit, Morningbell and Velveteen Pink. I couldn’t miss a Morningell/Velveteen Pink show, I just couldn?t.

I walked into The Atlantic in between Oh No?s and Morningbell?s set. The place was packed and, with wall-to-wall people, the joint was HOT. I immediately went up front to see what Morningbell had in store for their show that night. They kicked it off with a fantastic rendition of Love and Happiness. It featured a horn section, 3 piece doo-wop harmony section of beautiful young ladies and Travis Atria, the lead singer, stepping out in a gleaming white suit handing out roses. This was an incredible way to start off their set.

Morningbell was unusually energetic through out the entire set. Travis and Eric, the bass player and brother, were dancing like crazy men. Travis?s solos were classic and right on. As their set moved into the slower songs, Travis?s voice became more distorted and almost dream-like. With the beautiful space-like music and the bright white light shining on him, he took on an almost angelic aura. Morningbell closed their set with Montage, a great space-like ballad. The stage lit up, as a sequence of lights attached to each instrument - or jacket, in the case of the axe men - shined as each one begun to play. A great end to a great set.

Next up was Velveteen Pink, the sexiest guys to wear baby blue and hot pink since Prince. The kind of debonair outfits that command attention - white pants, bright, baby blue, high-collared shirts, fluorescent pink scarfs and huge white-rimmed glasses.

Their music is just as original as their look.

Velveteen Pink is known for their electronic, synth-groove sound. No one is Gainesville sounds like them, which is what makes them so appealing.

One aspect that I think is really special about Velveteen Pink is that the drummer, Nicholas, is also the lead singer. He has an incredible voice that can range from deep and sexy to loud and powerful. At times, the entire band sings four-part harmonies - a rare sight in these parts.

Both Morningbell and Velveteen Pink put on shows that are pleasing for the eyes and the ears. If you haven’t seen them, or are just in the mood for something different, you should definitely check them out.

Orange Records …and This is My Odyssey!

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

Orange is proud to introduce our newborn baby …And This Is My Odyssey.

Odyssey is Gainesville’s answer to the New York Dance-Rock scene.  The secret ingredient to Odyssey, however, is their mad scientist approach.  Led by Marc Vanderlaan’s Frankenstein bass/keyboard and haunting lead vocals, Odyssey pulses with the rhythm of 10,000 Gloria Estefans.

Look for their release in late 2006.

Who you callin sellout?

Saturday, August 26th, 2006

So, the 2006/2007 academic year kicked off with a bang last night at
the Atlantic in Downtown Gainesville.  It also marked the beginning of
Morningbell’s 4th school year playing in town.

And what a night it was.  Just as we took the stage and got into our
set, the Atlantic had to start turning people away because they were
over their maximum capacity.

Also, after we finished our set, two ambulances showed up because a
girl passed out!  It was like all those Michael Jackson videos of the
early 90’s where the eastern european girls would all pass out when
they saw michael in concert and the staff was spraying the crowd with
firehoses to cool them off.

Oh No unexpectedly released their CD and played a kickass set and
Velveteen Pink were outrageous as ever.

It’s gonna be a good Fall!@!

Not a Snakes on a Plane joke?

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

Doing some research for a new song, I was reading Samuel L. Jackson’s IMDB . Before he hit it big with Pulp Fiction in 1994, he used to be in some old Spike Lee movies and get some not-so-great roles in most other movies.
In most movies he’d play a drug addict or something like that, […]

It’s never too late… …Jesus. Current mood: jealous

Tuesday, August 15th, 2006

There’s a billboard on I-75 south that says “It’s never too late… …Jesus.”

First off, I’d like to point out how all religious themed billboards have terrible grammar skills.

Secondly, and most importantly, I’d like to point out that the double occurrence of the elipses insinuate that there’s a complete clause missing there.

So, Travis and I were trying to decide what would fit.  Here goes!

-It’s never too late to return your overdue library book, Jesus.

-It’s never too late to forgive your father for being an alcoholic, Jesus.

-It’s never too late for Taco Bell now with 24 hour drive thru, Jesus.

-It’s never too late to apologize for being such a prick the other night at Market Street, Jesus.

-It’s never too late to get an abortion, jesus.

-It’s never too late to whip it, whip it good, Jesus

-It’s never too late to masturbate, jesus.

-It’s never too late…  …Jesus, it’s too late now.

Who’s more refreshing on a hot day, Ice T or Ice Cube?

Wednesday, August 9th, 2006

Do you think Rappers took into account the refreshment value of their names when they picked them?

I’m sure Ice T and Ice Cube were like, I picked my rapper name because I’m sooooo cool.  But did they ever think of how their rap game would affect inner city children on hot summer days with no air conditioner in the projects because the super (great movie starring Joe Pesci) won’t get off his lazy dago ass to come fix it, and even if he did, they couldn’t afford to turn it on anyway?

Don’t even get me started on Vanilla Ice!

Or what about rappers who give themselves unearned superlatives? Dr Dre, Professor Griff, etc.  I wonder if they ever get tired of running into situations at restaurants or on airplanes where people are like “This man is going into renal failure, he has liver flukes, is anyone herre a doctor?” and Dr. Dre has to be all shrugging to everyone and mumbling, well yes and no.

(I’m not sure if I used the word superlatives correctly.  but i enjoyed doing it)
